The Ritual of the Aarti makes the light of the flame dispel darkness, the incense that is burnt gives out fragrance, a bell is rung, hands are clapped while one sings the Aarti. If you ask a Feng-Shui expert, he will confirm that all the above is very good to ward of an evil eye!
The ‘Aarti’ reminds us of the greatness of the Lord, because the flame that we rotate is symbolic of the Cosmos (Sun, Moon, Stars) revolving around the Almighty paying obeisance to Him.
Aarti:
Om Jaya Jagadeesha harey Swaami Jaya Jagadeesha harey Salutation to Thee, O Lord of the universe, Jo Dhyaavey Phala Paavey Dukha Vinasey Mana kaa Thou rewardest Thy devotees, who singest Thy praise, by removing their mental afflictions. A certain doctor's nephew had bone-cancer. The doctor tried all remedies, including surgical operation, but in vain. With acute pain, the boy cried pitiably. At last the doctor brought the boy to Baba and threw all burden on him. Daily Baba placed a blessing glance on the wound and applied Udi on it. Within a week, the boy was completely cured.
Another doctor had a guinea-worm in his leg, which was terribly swollen and caused intense pain. He approached Baba with a request to release him from his mortal coil and thus end his agony for good. Baba daily applied Udi to his leg and also administered it orally. One day, an attendant inadvertently stepped on the doctor's affected leg with the result that the wound burst open and the guinea-wom was driven out. The doctor was soon cured.
Whoever puts his feet on Shirdi soil, his sufferings would come to an end.
The wretched and miserable would rise into plenty of joy and happiness, as soon as they climb the steps of my Mosque.
I shall be ever active and vigorous even after leaving this earthly body.
My tomb shall bless and speak the needs of my devotees.
I shall be active and vigorous even from my tomb.
My mortal remains would speak from my tomb.
I am Ever living to help and guide all, who come to me, who surrender to me and who seek refuge in me.
If you look at me I look at you.
If you cast your burden on me, I shall surely bear it.
If you seek my advice and help, it shall be given to you at once.
There shall be no want in the house of my devotees.
There was that other occasion when many thought that the masjid which housed Sai Baba itself would be consumed by fire from the flames which leapt up from the dhuni. All that Baba did was to take some swipes at a wooden pillar in front of him. With every blow the flames subsided and the fire died down. "Miraculous," said his devotees. Often they would notice him stirring some hot concotion over the kitchen fire, not with a ladle but with his bare hands. There never was a time when his hand was scalded.
What supernatural powers did he have? On yet another occasion, Sai Baba was partaking of food with three of his devotees in the masjid when, without any cause for provocation, he exclaimed- "Stop!" Then, as if nothing had happened, the four continued with their meal. Lunch over and the dishes cleared, they stepped out of the masjid, when large chunks of the ceiling fell on the very spot where they had been seated only a few minutes earlier. Did Sai Baba's powers extend even to inanimate matter, the devotees wondered. Instances have been quoted by his devotees as to how Sai Baba commanded the rains to stop and the winds to cease.
These were instances of things they had seen with their own eyes. It was not secondhand information they had gathered. Sai Baba was to them as real as their homes and their fields and their cattle and the distant hills.Das Ganu once had an unforgettable experience. On a festive occasion, he sought Baba's permission to go to a place called Singba on the banks of the Godavari to have a bath in the holy waters. "No," Baba replied resolutely, "where is the need to go all the way when the Godavari is here right at my feet?" Das Ganu was vexed. He was willing to concede that Ganga the holy river (Baba frequently referred to Godavari as Ganga) rose from the feet of Sri Narayana (one among the Hindu trinity of Gods) himself, but his faith was not deep enough to believe that the waters of the Godavari could spring form the feet of his master, Sri Sai.
Baba who was reading Das Ganu's mind decided that this was the time to strengthen Das Ganu's faith. He told his devotee: "come closer to me and hold the hollow of your palms at my feet!". As soon as he did so water flowed freely out of the toes of the master's feet and filled the hollow of Das Ganu's palms in no time. His joy knew no limits. He sprinkled the water on his head and his body and distributed some more among the assembled devotees as tirtha (holy water).
One report has it that word had spread that the 3-year old daughter of a poor man called Babu Kirwandikar had fallen into the well and had been drowned. When the villagers rushed to the well they saw the child suspended in mid-air as if some invisible hand was holding her up! She was quickly pulled out.
Sai Baba was fond of that child who was often heard to say : I am Baba's sister!" After this incident, the villagers took her at her word. "it is all Baba's Leela", the people would say philosophically. They could offer no other explanation.
When Sai Baba first came to Shirdi it had of no basic facilities. There was a well put only in name. It had no natural spring water and if ever there had been one, it must long ago have dried up. Water had to be fetched from a distance. When, therefore, Sai Baba gave his permission to the villagers to celebrate the Ram Navami Fair, (Baba's Birthday) the big problem facing the organizers was one of water supply.
So What should they do but go to Sai Baba with their problem? "'Oh yes," said Sai Baba, 'so you want plenty of water, do you? Here, take this and drop it in the well and wait and see." "'This," turned up to be a platter of flowers on which some prasad (blessed food) had been placed along with the remnants of alms Baba had received earlier in the day. The villagers had no qualms about doing as they were did. Their faith in Sai Baba was total. No sooner had that platter of leaves been dropped in the well, it is said, water rose from the bottom as if by divine command and completely filled it. And great was the rejoicing of the people.
There is the story of one Rao Bahadur Moreshwar Fradhan who had come to Shirdi to take Sai Baba's darshan along with his wife. As the couple were about to leave, it began to rain heavily. Thunder and lightning rent the air. As the Pradhan couple looked round in dismay, Sai Baba prayed. "Oh Allah!" he intoned, "let the rains cease. My children are going home. Let them go peacefully!" The storm thereupon ceased, the downpour reduced to slight drizzle and the Pradhans were able to reach their destination safely.
Once, harvesting in Shirdi had been completed and the foodgrains of the entire village had been stored in a yard. The summer was on. The heat was intense as only those who have lived in Shirdi know. One afternoon Sai Baba summoned Kondaji Sutar and said to him: "Go, your field is on flrel" Frightened, Kondaji ran to his field and. frantically looked around for any sign of fire. There wasn't any. He returned to the masjid and informed Sai Baba that he had looked everywhere but had found no trace of fire and why did Baba have to frighten him?
Unfazed, Baba said : "You better turn back and look again." Baba was right after all. Kondaji noticed that a sheaf of corn was indeed on fire and smoke was billowing from it. A strong wind was fanning the fire and word had gone round to the villagers who now came running to the scene. "Sai Baba," the people shouted "help us, help us put the fire out!" Thereupon, Sai Baba walked casually towards the yard, sprinkled some water on a stack of sheaves and said: " There now! The fire will die down!" And so it happened.
Long before Sai Baba's fame spread, he was fond of burning lights in his Masjid and other Temples. But for the oil needed in those little earthenware lights that he lit, he depended on the generosity of the grocers of Shirdi. He had made it a rule to light earthenware lamps in the masjid every evening and he would call on the grocers for small donations. But there came a time when the grocers got tired of giving oil free to Sai Baba and one day they bluntly refused to oblige him, saying they had no fresh stocks.
Without a word of protest Sai Baba returned to the masjid. Into those earthenware lamps he poured water and lighted the wicks. The lamps continued to burn deep into the midnight. The matter came to the notice of the grocers who now came to Sai Baba with profuse apologies. Wouldn't Sai Baba kindly pardon them? Sai Baba pardoned them, but he warned them never to lie again. "You could have refused to give me the oil, but did you have to say that you didn't have fresh stocks?" he admonished them. But he had made his point.

India is blessed by many rivers, and through this riverine culture, the spirit and soul of the people and their religious practices and beliefs, manifest. One such river is the Godavari, which cuts across the state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital. Shirdi nestles close to this river.
Shirdi lies at a distance of 265 km from Mumbai; 210 km from Pune; 120 km from Nasik; 600 km from Hyderabad; 1166 km from Delhi; 310 km from Sholapur; 80 km from Ahmednagar, its district headquarters, and 19 km from the nearest railhead, Kopergaon.
Buses, planes and trains from any major city of India connect to one of the above points. Shirdi, a nondescript hamlet just a hundred years ago, is today the most-visited pilgrim destination for many, after Tirumala-Tirupati.
The spiritual force that put Shirdi on the international map is fondly called Sai Baba. He first came to Shirdi as part of a wedding party. Upon seeing this young, muscularly built, radiant person, Mhalsapati, the village goldsmith who was in-charge of the local Khandoba temple, saluted him and welcomed him with the following words: Aao Sai (Come Sai). The name stuck.
It was on Saturday December 7th 2002 morning that we had a chance to visit “Sai ka Angan”, Baba’s abode on the outskirts of Delhi. Baba seems to have taken on after the popular Indian mantra, “Chalo Delhi”, Delhi being capital of India. Once someone steps inside the door, then the difference between Shirdi and this place dissolves. The layout, the structure, interior and everything up to the nails in walls is so carefully done that one can’t say the difference between Baba’s abode in Shirdi and here. Not only that, HE himself sits next to the railing in the form of a life sized replica of HIS form as though saying to his visitors; “When this masjid was not built, then also I was present here but no one recognized me; hence I have come with the masjid, so that my devotees can recognize this place also as my abode!”
It is not mere coincidence that at that moment a family arrived here just returning from their trip to Shirdi and the lady’s statement bears truth when she exclaimed “It seems that we did not even leave and we are still in Shirdi!” Such is the magic of this place. Not to be carried away just by emotions and people’s reactions we decided to put our faith to test. The first thought that came to the mind was that no one speaks Marathi here, so this place can’t be Shirdi! What a cheap thought one may say! But pat came back the reply from the master sitting in his court. All of a sudden the speakers started blazing the glory of Shirdi and the Master in Marathi. Where from and who played the tape is not of importance so much that the tape played in Marathi and it was glorifying the Lord as was done by the villagers each morning in Shirdi. It started looking and feeling like the stories and characters were rising from the pages of Sai Satcharita to enact and replay the scenes that took place almost a century ago!
Not still satisfied, the eyes and the mind wanted more! The body stood in the “Sabha Mandap” or courtyard outside the famous three steps of the Masjid and prayed to Baba. “Baba, if this is you then I can’t climb the steps with out your permission. So, hey lord, till you give express permission, we can’t come up!” Not even a minute passed after this mental prayer was offered then came the result from the master. Some one walked up and said, “Please step into the masjid and do “phanka” (fan the master)”. With tears in eyes, hair standing up on its edges and ego crushed, the command was instantly accepted and obeyed.
Then as if to satisfy more, the Master continued to play his game. All of a sudden from no where long lines of children, mothers and fathers, started queuing in front of the masjid. Upon inquiry, it was informed that on this day, there was a comprehensive health camp being organized by “Sukarya” a non governmental organization for the benefit of poor and needy followed by “annadan” or feeding the poor. Baba’s Handi and Radha krihsna Mayi’s kitchen started playing in the very front of our eyes. Many ladies donning the roles of Laxmi and Radha Krishna Mayi relived the days of Baba’s Shirdi, some cutting vegetables, some serving the food, some cooking but all of them very immersed in telling tales of Baba’s influence in their lives!
Came the time for Arathis, one could clearly hear the conch of the shell loud and clear for miles, inviting and informing one and all of the time for Arathi. The masjid roared with live singing of “Ghevooni Pancharathi..”. And our feeble minds wanted to test Baba’s strength merely on the language of Marathi! “Shame on us! O’ Lord of Lords, please forgive this sinner! How many times have you told and explained to us and how many times we have not listened we know not, by you know it all! Hey Baba, have mercy. At this moment, we do not even feel worthy of your grace but out of your kindness, please do forgive us for we are not even worthy of that!”. The mind presently came back as the arathi was ending. Then came the time for “langar” or partaking of food. Men and women got busy in serving the food that was being prepared since morning. Seeing there were big lines, we thought of waiting on the side. Stepping on the dirt, all of sudden the eyes fell on a long line of ants walking very briskly in a great hurry. Curiosity arisen, we started to follow the long line of ants very busily going and coming from somewhere. The trail led straight to the back of the masjid, where there was a small hole and through which were seen ants carrying on their back, a pinch of food for a human, but as big as a cart load no doubt for the little ant in a line. The same food that was being served on the other side of the wall! Reminds of food served from Baba’s daily begging rounds? By this time, the heart was begging the Master to stop proving his point!
The jet lag started to set in, the body was very tired from the long journey and the back was hurting immensely. The body was screaming to rest and lie down but the crowds were still looming. How can one leave without taking Baba’s prasad and his permission. After all, He has already shown his presence! The mind started its game once again. “Why not ask Baba to cure this hurt and avoid bearing the pain? He is here isn’t it, then why can’t he provide relief for it?” Not even a moment passed after the thought arose that the eyes fell on a sign declaring that place to be where Baba stood leaning and distributing Udhi. Having read the sign, we quickly walked there and standing against the wall started rubbing our backs to the wall. In less than few minutes, all the pain in the back vanished and the body felt well rested with out any signs of tiredness at all!
Thus the day continued with sharing and listening to Baba’s leelas and stories from many. While taking his leave, a though arose to pen this day down for whose benefit and for whom we know not! We are sure though that through this he will reach his intended audience. The Dwarkamayee of North India, “Sai Ka Angan”, is located in Sushant Lok, Gurgaon, Haryana on the outskirts of Delhi.
If one is in Delhi for a visit, one should surely check out this place of Baba that brings Shirdi and its experience away from Shirdi.
